V-carving

V-shaped bits cut grooves that change depth as they change width. That is what gives lettering and line work crisp, sharp corners instead of the rounded ones a straight bit leaves behind.

Why the bit shape matters

A straight bit cuts a groove with vertical walls, so every line comes out the same width as the bit and inside corners come out rounded. There is no way around it. The bit cannot cut a corner sharper than its own diameter.

A V bit is a cone. The deeper it goes, the wider the groove gets. Easel works out the depth needed at every point along your artwork so the groove tapers to a true point wherever two lines meet. That is what makes lettering look carved rather than routed.

Serif fonts, script, fine line art and anything with a sharp interior angle all depend on this. It is usually the first thing people notice about work that came off a Pro plan.

V bits of different angles used for V-carving in Easel
V bits come in different included angles. A narrow angle reaches into finer detail, a wide angle clears bigger areas faster.
